An essential prerequisite for more efficient energy consumption in public properties is data of current status and consumption. LoRaWAN has the potential to better monitor energy consumption, identify unnecessary or excess energy consumers, detect disruptions more quickly and plan energy renovation measures more precisely. This can protect the climate and resources as well as ease precarious financial situations.
In our non-profit research program 2023, we are exploring the question of how local authorities can successfully build their own LoRaWAN infrastructures and test use cases in building energy management systems on their way to become smart cities/smart regions. The study will be published at the end of the year.
This spotlight sheds light on use cases for LoRaWAN in Luebeck, Wolfsburg, Osnabrueck and Schimberg/Thuringia. It shows how municipalities are using the technology to save energy in public properties.
