The meta-study evaluates current studies, guidelines and events in the second half of 2021 on the topic of smart cities and digital regions.
The evaluation reveals a heterogeneous picture: While large cities in particular, but also some medium-sized cities, are among the pioneers in the field of German smart municipalities, other municipalities have only begun to explore the potential of digital solutions. It is important to implement digitization not only comprehensively, but also securely. Many municipalities and municipal companies have recognized that their increasing digitization is accompanied by an increased threat of cyber attacks. Nevertheless, there is an implementation gap, for example in the transformation to the home office or mobile working. Open source solutions can be a suitable instrument for bringing digital innovations to the field.
