Christian Märkel is a Senior Economist in the "Communication and Innovation" department. His work focuses on innovation research, especially on the topics of blockchain and AI.
He was project manager of the "Blockchain Expert Dialogue" for the BMWK (2020 - 2023). In addition, he was deputy head of the accompanying research for the BMWK funding priority "Mittelstand-Digital" and coordinated the AI trainer programme based there, which is part of the Federal Government's strategy for artificial intelligence.
Before joining WIK, Mr Märkel worked as a research assistant in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament. As a speaker, Mr Märkel dealt intensively with fiscal policy and inter-municipal fiscal equalisation. Previously, Mr Märkel worked for three years as a research assistant at the Centre for Applied Economic Research (CAWM) at the University of Münster. During this time, Mr Märkel worked intensively on the platform economy and the competition policy analysis of the digital economy. Mr Märkel studied economics at the universities of Münster and Zurich. He completed his studies in 2013 with a Master's degree (M. Sc.).
