AI and AI Readiness in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a driver of innovation for many companies - but small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are often not yet fully utilising its potential. The short study ‘AI and AI readiness in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises’ examines the requirements that small and medium-sized enterprises need to fulfil in order to successfully implement AI. Practical recommendations and maturity models show how SMEs can strengthen their competitiveness in the long term.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has long been a key driver of innovation and efficiency in companies. However, while large companies are increasingly relying on AI, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are still hesitant to fully utilise the potential of this technology. This short study on ‘AI and AI readiness in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises’ sheds light on precisely this challenge: How and in which areas must SMEs fulfil the necessary requirements in order to successfully implement AI and thus strengthen their competitiveness in the long term?

The term AI readiness is made up of the willingness and ability of companies to implement AI-based applications. The study shows that a large number of criteria from the areas of strategy, culture, data, technology and infrastructure in companies and organisations need to be fulfilled. The study provides insights into current maturity models and uses a comprehensive survey of AI experts to show how small and medium-sized companies can self-assess their strengths and weaknesses in this area. Based on ‘AI readiness checks’, success factors and best practices are identified that enable SMEs to take targeted measures for successful AI utilisation.

The study offers practical recommendations and strategies to help SMEs overcome the digital divide compared to large companies and utilise the benefits of AI on a smaller scale. It is aimed at entrepreneurs, associations and other multipliers who want to support SMEs on their path to digital transformation.
