The blockchain technology has the potential to significantly contribute to a more sustainable economy and society. However, this potential is often hindered by a lack of transparence of the technology and its energy intensity as well as a lack of data on the economic viability of blockchain solutions. In order to overcome these obstacles, it is important to promote the development of blockchain applications that are both sustainable in themselves and contribute to the sustainable development goals. Furthermore, public funding should be used to support the development of market-ready blockchain applications, in order to accelerate the diffusion of the technology. The study is published as part of the Blockchain Expert Dialogue for the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action.
