The study is dedicated to the potentials of blockchain technology to support climate action and the energy transition. The study focuses on the following questions:
- What are the opportunities as well as the obstacles of using blockchain technology in the areas of energy-, emissions-, and transparency & sustainability-management?
- How do executives from German companies assess the use of blockchain in the three management areas mentioned?
- What options for action are available to the public sector that could be conducive to the use of blockchain for the purpose of climate action and the energy transition?
The study is based, among other things, on the findings of an interdisciplinary, full-day workshop with approximately 50 blockchain experts from business, science and administration, which took place in January 2023 in virtual form, as well as on a company survey of 200 executives from blockchain-experienced German companies in energy-intensive industries. The study was conducted under the project management of WIK-Consult, with the support of the IT University of Copenhagen and the Fraunhofer IML as well as Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Roman Beck and Prof. Dr. Dagmar Gesmann-Nuissl.
